The West Ottawa Basketball Association is looking for Referees for the upcoming Season!

If you have an interest in refereeing basketball games and earn money doing it, consider joining our team and becoming a West Ottawa Basketball Association referee!
You will be joining a team that is mentored by experienced referees with over 25 years of experience. The West Ottawa Basketball Association is currently looking for referees of all levels between the ages of 15 to 55 and over to referee games in all divisions. There are approximately 20-30 games every weekend during the season that are officiated by West Ottawa Basketball referees. Compensation per game is based on experience.
The West Ottawa Basketball Association will provide you with free training as well as a referee uniform and whistle ($50 deposit is required and will be refunded once uniform is returned at end of season). Applicants should have a strong knowledge of basketball and mandatory in-class and on-floor training will take place in September and October and will be conducted by one of our experienced senior referees. We also provide additional training during the season in the form of ‘shadowing sessions’ where younger referees are paired with experienced referees during an actual game.
The West Ottawa Basketball Association also appoints a Referee in Chief who will be responsible for developing and implementing training programs as well as monitoring and performing evaluations of all referees throughout the season.
All recreational games follow FIBA basketball rules with age-based modifications.
Many of our referees are players or coaches as well so the West Ottawa Basketball Association will accommodate these referees by working around their schedules. Referees are required to set their availability a week ahead of time so that our scheduler can assign games based on availability. This is all done easily through our website.

Philosophy:

We are very fortunate to have a solid base of referees with years of experience. We will concentrate on the fundamentals for new referees and fine-tune the more senior referees in judgment calls and positioning. For first-time referees, we will start you at the novice level with a senior referee to support you at all games and you will be properly trained and prepped prior to your first game. We will continue to work closely with the coaches to reinforce the fundamentals of basketball by taking the time to explain calls to novice and atom-level players, as we find that “instant feedback” results in players quickly correcting their errors. The more senior levels of referees will concentrate on the consistency of calls and the application of rules.
