west ottawa hornets competitive program
The West Ottawa Basketball Association offers a Competitive Program for players seeking a higher level of basketball competition. The program, led by NCCP trained coaches, focuses on developing players' basketball and athletic abilities to prepare them for competitive play.
the competitive season
West Ottawa Hornets competitive teams compete against other Ontario Basketball Association teams in the Ontario Basketball League, Eastern Ontario Basketball Association League and in various tournaments. Teams will practice in local gyms and will play in league games in and outside of the city. While all practices and games are scheduled, there can be schedule changes due to weather, gym cancellations, etc.
West Ottawa Hornets are travel teams. Players will travel to tournaments and will be responsible for hotel costs etc. Team fees are collected at the start of the season to cover any tournament costs, referee costs, etc which can amount to $500+ for the season, depending on the team's schedule.
At the U10/U12 level, the primary focus is on player development and fostering a love for the game of basketball. Coaches dedicate their time to honing fundamental skills and enhancing athleticism, all while instilling a sense of fair play and sportsmanship in their players.
Teams at this level typically practice a minimum of twice a week and participate in regular travel to compete in games both within and outside of their city. These games serve as opportunities for the players to qualify for the Ontario Basketball Championships, where they can showcase their talents and compete against other competitive teams in their division.
Tipping off against other competitive-level competition provides valuable learning experiences for young athletes, allowing them to grow and improve their understanding of the sport. Furthermore, the teamwork required in a competitive basketball setting helps players build strong relationships with their teammates and develop crucial skills in collaboration and communication.
Overall, the U10/U12 level offers a rich environment for players to enhance their basketball skills, cultivate a passion for the game, and forge lasting friendships with their teammates.
At the U13 level and above, teams will engage in practices 2-3 times per week in local gymnasiums. In addition to regular practices, teams will also travel throughout the season to compete in games both within and outside the city. The ultimate goal is to qualify for the Ontario Basketball Championships.
Participating at a higher level of competition allows players to further develop and refine their basketball skills. With competition against other competitive-level opponents, athletes are able to push themselves to new heights and expand their knowledge of the game. This increased level of competition also fosters team unity and cohesiveness, as players work together towards a common goal.
Throughout the season, players have the opportunity to grow both individually and as a team. The skills and lessons learned on the court will not only benefit players during their time with the team, but will also serve them well in their future endeavors both on and off the basketball court.
