Our highly popular Summer Jam Basketball Camp is back for a third year. It’s designed to get both recreational and competitive players ready for the upcoming basketball season!
The camp will include a mix of conditioning, skills development, movement and spacing on the floor with a focus on how to think the game better. Small-sided games and drills will place an emphasis on fun while developing critical shooting, ball-handling, passing and defensive skills.
A camp-ending tournament will enable players to compete and get game-ready for the season!

Camp attendees will work on the following skills:
  • Ball-handling: Sharpening their ability to use both hands; protecting the ball from defenders; using change of speed and direction to drive past a defender; learning or sharpening more advanced dribbles.
  • Shooting: Instructors have been taught by and worked with NBA shooting coach Dave Love and WNBA and NBA shooting coach BriAnna Garza. Throughout the camp, we will progress from strengthening fundamentals (release point, finish, guide hand, footprint, leg drive) to improving mid-range shooting arc and accuracy, to more advanced shots for players who have the strength and ability (runners, floaters, and 3-point shots). We will work on shooting off the catch and the dribble.
  • Passing: Players will improve their ability to pass with both hands and with one hand with age-appropriate passes.
  • Rebounding: We will focus on the fundamentals of boxing out, getting the rebound, and using proper footwork and body position to either score on an offensive rebound or start the defensive transition.
  • Defensive Fundamentals: Players will learn how to improve their ability to defend 1 on 1 and how to become a more effective defender off the ball.
  • Movement and Spacing: We will teach players how to properly move and space the floor using cuts, filling gaps and enabling space for their teammates to drive the ball.
  • Transition: Players will learn how to play in transition on both sides of the ball, including sprinting, spacing and defending with an advantage or disadvantage.
Attendees will have fun, learn new things and will sharpen existing skills, while making new friends in the gym. All attendees will receive a Summer Jam dri-fit t-shirt.

Mark Emond and Brian Cameron are the Camp Directors and lead instructors. Mark and Brian are Head Coaches for West Ottawa’s U16 and U15 Competitive Girls Teams. Mark has previously coached at the provincial level at the Ontario Summer Games and Brian at the U Sports level, with the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
Our highly popular Summer Jam Basketball Camp is back this year with a NEW addition!
We are pleased to open a new week of summer basketball for our 5 to 7 year old players!
We will have a 1:5 instructor to player ratio which will ensure all players will have a great experience!
The primary focus of this camp is to improve young player's basic basketball skills in a fun, engaging and supportive environment. Its goal is to foster a love for the game and encourage teamwork and social skills.

Camp attendees will work on the following skills:
  • Introduction to Fundamental Skills: The camp will prioritize introducing the players to fundamental basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting and simple defense maneuvers. The aim is to build a strong foundation in a way that's enjoyable and tailored to this age group.
  • Promoting Physical Fitness: Summer Jam Camp will encourage physical activity and demonstrate how basketball can be a fun way to stay active and healthy. The activities will be designed to improve the player's coordination, balance and motor skills.
  • Enhancing Social Interaction: Through group activities and team-based games, this camp will focus on teaching players the value of teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship. They will learn essential life skills such as how to communicate with peers, sharing and how to play together.
  • Building Confidence and Self-Esteem: By learning new skills and being part of a team, players will gain confidence and a sense of achievement. The camp will provide a supportive atmosphere where every player is encouraged and celebrated for their efforts and improvements.
  • Fun and Engagement: Instructors will ensure that all activities are designed to be fun and engaging, with a mix of learning and play. They will incorporate interactive games and challenges that are suitable for this age group to keep players excited and motivated throughout the camp.
Attendees will have fun and learn new things while making new friends in the gym. All attendees will receive a Summer Jam dri-fit t-shirt.

Diego Acubierre is the Camp Director and lead instructor. Diego has been a West Ottawa Basketball Head Coach of a West Ottawa Stingers U8 team for 2 years, has coached U12 girls basketball and U8 soccer. He is a former competitive basketball player and is a certified running coach, Ironman coach and personal trainer.
